Two organisational changes: - We're switching to Thursday evening for this meeting, since Fridays didn't work well for some. - We're now meeting monthly — let's see how it goes!

Meeting early at 16:00 to have plenty of time for a bug squashing party. Feel free to join us later as well. We're happy about everybody joining us. Cooperatively fixing some failed hydra builds from https://zh.fail/, trying to make it interesting for all skill levels. There will also be pizza!
Martin Schwaighofer is going to present his project laut, which is a proposed new signature format for Nix, with better security properties, in some sense meant to replace the current scheme that is used to sign cached build outputs. The project is still work in progress, but aims to implement the ideas behind his talk at NixCon 2024 "rebuilding builders instead of trusting trust". In his talk he will try to explain what the point of all that work is, and what he hopes the Nix ecosystem will gain from its adoption in the future. If there is interest, he can also talk a bit about his other project vibenix, which autonomously creates Nix packages starting from a repository URL. Both projects are part of Martin's research on supply chain security at JKU in Linz, where he is working on his PhD.
There will be room for casual chat on all things Nix(OS) after the talk.

We will start at about 18:00 and casually talk about all things Nix & NixOS, as they come up. We'll also start to plan a new regular meetup with inputs and all in the upcoming months.
The plan is to have a chat while people arrive and start the program with a round of introductions before talks & demos.
While the inputs focus on declarative disk partitioning & provisioning NixOS, we try to keep talks below an hour to leave plenty of time for all kinds of questions, discussion & chats during the rest of the evening.
The meetup will be held on Thursday the 26th of October (a national holiday). We will start at about 18:00 and casually talk about all things Nix & NixOS, as they come up. We'll also start to plan a new "proper" meetup with inputs and all somewhen in the next months.

NixOS is awesome for packaging existing software, with helpers for many common build systems.
From an operators's perspective, it really shines with composing software. How about the developer's perspective?
Nix is a programming language so it should be able to adapt to many use cases.
A developer wanting to use Nix from the ground floor up, may care about various questions:
We'll take an overview of various development tools, based on Nix and NixOS:
